"Woman, Why are You Crying? "

She walked the edge of the canyon,
unaware crushed beneath her feet –
willowherb, chickweed, dandelion –
unaware the starling sang
and the squirrel gossiped,
unaware the sun shone on an altar
beside the spring
at the bottom of the canyon

"woman, why are you crying?"

Do you weep because your house lacks a husband,
your home without children?

Do you weep at the work set before you,
another day without rest?

Do you weep because you are not pretty,
your hair frizzes,
there is a run in your stocking,
you need a light,
your wine warm,
your wafer broken?

"why are you crying, woman?”

Do you weep because you are weak,
assaulted, betrayed,
a weakness in you some desire?

Your tears water spring’s beauty,
your sorrow binds the ground
that holds fir and cedar aloft
your love carries the pigeon’s song,
the jays,
crows,
mockingbird.

Weep until your tears are dry,
gather your garments
and take your place.

She walked the edge of the canyon,
aware, trilliums beneath her feet.
